Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are tiny titanium posts that are surgically implanted into your jawbone, where they function as artificial tooth roots.

Titanium is highly biocompatible, meaning your body doesn’t recognize it as a foreign substance.

Because of this, dental implants fuse with your jawbone as you’re healing from the surgery, creating an incredibly sturdy foundation on top of which your dentist can secure a restoration like a crown, bridge, or dentures.

Why do I need to replace missing teeth?

Missing teeth do a lot more damage to your mouth than just leaving behind unsightly holes in your smile.

The empty space left by missing teeth can cause the rest of your natural teeth to shift out of alignment and drift towards the empty hole. This can throw off your bite and lead to premature wear and tear on your teeth as well as TMJ disorder.

Missing teeth in your smile also deprives your jawbone of necessary stimulation. When your jawbone isn’t properly stimulated, the bone tissue begins to deteriorate, leaving your jaw more weak and fragile and causing your facial muscles to atrophy and create a “sunken-in” appearance.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

By replacing your tooth roots, dental implants prevent many of the complications associated with missing teeth. They keep the rest of your natural teeth in place, and provide your jawbone with healthy stimulation, effectively staving off bone loss.

They also offer a few advantages over other tooth-replacement options, like bridges or dentures. Unlike bridges, dental implants don’t require you to shave down any enamel from neighboring teeth, allowing you to keep more of your natural tooth structures intact.

Implant-supported dentures tend to be more comfortable and secure than traditional dentures that are held in place by suction or adhesive, making them easier to eat and speak with.

What denture options do you offer for implants?

A One Day Dentures offers a wide variety of implant-supported dentures, including:

  • Ball attachments
  • Bar attachments
  • Screw-retained over-dentures
  • All-on-4 dental implants

Whatever your denture implant needs are, A One Day Dentures is proud to serve them.

What is the process for getting dental implants?

To properly place a dental implant, a few visits are required. During your first visit, your dentist makes a small incision in your gum, drills a tiny hole in your jawbone, and places your implant.

Over the next few months, your implant fuses with your bone in a process called “osseointegration.”

Once you’ve osseointegrated, your dentist places your abutment, which is a small post that connects to your implant and sticks up out of your gumline, where it supports your crown, bridge, or dentures.

After your abutment has settled, your dentist takes an impression of your mouth and sends it off to a lab that fabricates your restoration. When your restoration is ready, your dentist affixes it to your abutment, giving you a beautiful new smile that you’ll be proud to share with the world.
